DiscoCat is for discovering, streaming, rating, and tracking musical artists and composers from the popular to the obscure.

Discover and Explore

  • Search for artists (bands, musicians, composers, etc.), record labels, and creative works in external catalogs

  • Shazam playing music to find the recording, release, and artist

  • Suggested Artists: discover many other artists that share the same genres as your favorite artists

  • Recent Releases: keep up-to-date with the latest releases from your favorite artists

  • Tap on a genre or tag to find other artists that share the same ones

  • View comprehensive artist discography, not just the ones with streaming contracts

  • Learn about all the current and former members of a band or find other bands an individual artist was/is in

  • List all the creative works of an individual songwriter, composer, lyricist, etc.

  • Find related artists such as cover bands, related releases such as tribute albums, and related record labels

  • List all tracks for a given release or release version and get details for each track including related recording and work

  • List all release versions optionally grouped by format (such as vinyl, CD, etc.) or release country

  • View detailed release album art and sometimes even images of physical media such as records, jackets, liner notes, etc.

  • Tap once on artwork to enter zoom then double-tap to toggle between zoom modes

  • See all the musicians, engineers, producers, and other recording personnel that contributed to a recording

  • Find the creative work associated with a track or recording and from there, find other recordings from other artists who also covered it

  • If you can’t find what you are looking for in the item details, most item types also include an extensive list of external links to related sites such as fan pages, music services, lyrics sites, etc.

Stream

  • Apple Music subscribers may stream any artist, release, or track that is found in Apple’s streaming catalog without leaving the app

  • Users without Apple Music subscriptions will still be provided with external links if it is found in Apple Music

Rate and Track

  • Rate or simply bookmark any artist, release, release-version, track, recording, work, or record-label to save it to your collection¹

  • Your collection is stored on iCloud so it can be accessed on all platforms

  • Group your saved artists by genre or country or simply show all sorted by rating

  • Group your saved tracks by album or artist or simply show all sorted by rating

  • Group your saved releases by artist or genre or type or simply show all sorted by rating

  • Group your saved release versions by artist or country or format or simply show all sorted by rating

  • Several different rating schemes are supported such as 3, 4, or 5 star, out-of-ten, like/dislike, favorite, etc.

  • ¹ Saving more than 10 of any item type (artist, release, etc.) requires an active subscription to the full version

Unfortunately, probably not. As it stands now, the developer license for the Spotify SDK for commercial apps is much too restrictive, requiring at least a quarter of a million active monthly users, among other things. Even if DiscoCat used the Spotify SDK, the “in-app” streaming functionality leads to an awkward user experience since it sometimes requires a momentary switch to the Spotify app and back to authenticate prior to playing.

Possibly. We will be looking into the APIs of other streaming services (other than Spotify) to see if they offer the streaming functionally that we need. For those that do not, we are planning to move their external links up to the streaming section for easier access (like we do currently for Spotify).

That is the dream. If enough of you support us with a subscription, we may be able to hire more developers! 😘
